ORANGE COUNTY OLD NEIGHBORHOODS

BARRIOS, COLONIAS AND CAMPOS;

IN SEARCH OF HISTORIC MEXICAN NEIGHBORHOODS

Mexican urban Barrios and Colonias in the early 1900s often formed around a particular place of work where property values were low, or where lots had been subdivided again and again for the profit of a land speculator, whereas outside the city limits, employers and packing houses often supplied company housing in an effort to promote a stable workforce. In the greater area of La Naranja (Orange County), many early century Colonias and Barrios were established as citrus camps, where workers were tied to a single employer or packing plant. Residential patterns ranged from company built housing areas, to communities in which workers laid out the street, built their own homes, developed small businesses, and as was also done in Santa Ana’s Barrios, engaged in the domestic production of clothing and vegetables. By the 1950s, there were some 40 Mexican neighborhoods spread across all of Orange County. Some of these old neighborhoods you can still find, but it’s too late for finding others because they have been done away with by gentrification.

Gentrification projects intended to drive out Mexicans from Orange County are nothing new. In the 1930s, immigration officials deported entire camps in La Habra and Fullerton. During the 1950s, Anaheim officials bulldozed the La Conga Barrio near Glover Stadium to clear space for parking lots. Barrio after Barrio have fallen victim for one gentrification project or another over the last century. And the sinister planning continues to take place even to this day. From San Juan Capistrano to Fullerton, among swap meets and factories and all along the railroad tracks, luxury condos, apartments, homes and other pricey developments are metastasizing in or near neighborhoods and commerce centers that Mexicans have populated since the days when orange groves outnumbered people.

The coming loss of community in these Barrios might not be as dramatic as what happened during the massive Mexican deportations executed by county and federal agents during the Great Depression and the 1950s. But gentrification ultimately proves more insidious and more successful in getting us Brown Raza out. So take a cruise through those remaining Barrios, check out their people and their streets and enjoy their history before yuppie filth ruin them as they did Echo Park.

You and I both know, that there is something very special about those scatterd places were our familas, our kinfolks, and our old neighbors grew up, were we grew up. Something so special that it makes us say with fondness and pride, that we are from Santa Nita, from La Colonia Independencia, from La Jolla, from Los Coyotes or from this or that Olden Barrio or Colonia. Because in spite of the poverty of the places, the richness is in the heritage, in the close-knit nature of the people who live there sharing joys and the tragedies which life has to offer.

What remains of many of those that have disappeared under a never-ending OC developing project are the stories and photographs, intact in the hearts and minds of those viejos who lived the tiempos.

Here's a list of some of those old Mexican neighborhoods.

hey whats up LW I was wondering if yo could do a story about varrio orphans 13 they've been round for a long time from los to oxc to sd, i used to kick it with los huerfanos back in the 90's in westminster as far as i know ophs in oxc was started by a homie named big boy from los back in 86 and in el cajon by three bros from oxc in 89

Lonewolf said...

OPHS West Side L.A. and OxC, if you got the history shoot it my way at ranchosp13@cox.net or ranchosp13@yahoo.com and I'll post it up, but as it is right now I don't know much about Thee Orphans. I been hearing they have a clique in El Cajon but I didn't figure them to be all from the same, so if you want a page dedicated to ORPHANS, then you got to fill me in with their history. And if you got some art to go with it, even better.

LW this is what i know about los huerfanos.. i used to kick it with them from about 89 to 94 in OxC westminster to be exact, the hood is westminster and newland st, in the apts on 15st, people used to call that neighborhood the ghettos it was pretty crazy..., in el Cajon, three bros, telico, solo and lil solo, from the hood in OxC moved to the Box, and started a click over there, from what i hear they are still active, i dont how active the barrio in OxC is, and the hood in Los well i dont know too much about that, back in the early 90's there was orphans clicks in LA,OxC,El Cajon,Pico Rivera, Long beach, i dont know if the other clicks are still around

This is in response to the question of what varrio is older O.V.C or Modena. Back in the day Varrio MODENA Locos was known as Los Royal Decents de Modena (and that was way back in the day).On the other hand old town Orange is the oldest neighborhood in orange,(but back in the day..as it still pretty much is now, thats were all the white folks lived)all the chicano people lived in El Modena. So I would have to say that Modena is the oldest varrio in orange. and also one of the oldest gangs in Orange County.

THIS IS TO ANSWER UR QUESTION AGAIN ON WHOS THE OLDEST VARRIO BETWEEN ORANGE VARRIO CYPRESS AND EL MODENA MANY PEOPLE THINK EL MODENA IS THE OLDEST GANG BUT IF U LOOK BACK ORANGE VAARIO CYPRESS HAS BEEN AROUND SINCE THE 1920S AND ALSO REMEBER THAT ORANGE WAS ONE OF THE OLDEST CITY IN LA NARANJA AND ORANGE VARRIO CYPRESS HAS BEEN THERE SINCE THE BEGINNING

This neighborhood is a small barrio that dates back to the 1920s. Take a look at the small cottages on 4th and 5th Avenues and McFadden that date back to that era.
Why did you edit the reference to "El Campo"

Anonymous said...

Named for the color of the houses constructed from redwood (other sources say the houses were painted red) with red tar roofing shingles, the Red Camp was established by the La Habra Citrus Growers Association in the Teens to house Mexican-American and Mexican immigrant citrus workers. Doing so provided the growers association with a steady, reliable workforce. It was located to the south of town adjacent to a barrio named El Barrio and south of the railroad tracks.
The former colonia, faced with the rise in higher paying non-agricultural jobs and the decline of agricultural work due to development, was razed in the '40s to make way for a trailer park. El Barrio later inherited the El Campo Colorado name.

Anonymous said...

the old days, La Habra, Calif., was a city of social simplicity. It was easy to see where people belonged. The Mexican workers were clustered south of the railroad tracks, primarily in labor camps called Campo Corona, or Campo Colorado (The Red Camp) because of the deep crimson color of the dormitory-style housing.

FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO ARE QUESTIONING MODENA AND OVC HISTORY I SUGGEST YOU DO YOUR RESEARCH BECAUSE ALL THE OLDER OLDER VETARANOS AND MY GRANDPA WHO IS 86 WILL TELL YOU THAT MODENA IS THE ORIGNAL AND OLDEST GANG IN ORANGE.

I grew up in "Paddy Land" Garden Grove, across the street ( Chapman Between Santa Rosalia and Beach Blvd.) from "Crow Village" Stanton. I had friends from both neighborhoods and I was too young to understand the history of these communities. While researching "Crow Village" I learned that there was an Native American Tribe the tUhkaa'ka which translates to "Crow Village" or "Raven Village". The Hidatsas and Crows lived peacefully for many generations but separated in a town called STANTON ... but this was in Stanton, Massachusetts not Stanton, California. Hmmmm. Is it possible that a branch of the Crow Village tribe could have settled Stanton, California? It seems like a remarkable coincidence? I am very curious about this areas history.

CORRECTION. I checked the page ... Unfortunately, I couldn't cut and paste because it came off of a copywrite marked page that was posted on-line.

the title read:

The Separation Between the Hidatsas and Crows

According to the article, these tribles originally lived as one people in North Dakota but had a dispute over a buffalo kill near Stanton, Montana ( Not Massachusetts!!!)ad separated. Anyway, the tUhkaa'ka or "Crow Village" people then settled in Stanton, Montana. Perhaps another dispute brought families to settle Stanton, California?? .. Or perhaps, in a more serious tone the relocation was involuntary .... as is so tragically common throughout history.

I have learned more about the Native American tribe, the Arikara which translates as "Crow Village". The Arikara were a very accomplished matriarchal agricultural society that lived near Stanton,North Dakota and Stanton,Montana at Like-a-Fishhook near the Knife River. The Arikara met with Lewis and Clark ... and (the often unmentioned) York, York worked as Clark's slave and was of African descent.) The expedtition satyed withthe Arikara for 5 days and were asked to dispatch a representative to meet with President Jefferson. In the late 1800's, The Arikara were forced from their land and were made to live on a reservation which was eventually reduced in size and then partially flooded by the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers' Garrison Dam.
You may be wondering ... How does this relate to Crow Village in Stanton, California? I don't know .. I am just from "Paddy Land" ... but I am hoping that someone from the Crow Village varrio may have a wise old Abuelita or Abuelito who may have have heard of a time when the people of Crow Village in Stanton, SD or MT migrated to found Crow Village in Stanton, CA. If you check Stanton's home page, the history of how it was named remains uncertain. I could be wrong about all of this Arikara speculation ... I am no historian but I do know that the entire region of east Long Beach an Orange County was once part of the 85,000 acre Rancho Los Alamitos, which was part of the 300,000 acre land grant given to Manuel Perez Nieto by the Crown on Spain in 1790. The land was stolen by Spain was stolen from the Gabrielino-Tongva tribe who had inhabited this region since 500 A.D.
Rancho Los Alamitos and every development that followed has been built on the backs of Mexican vaqueros, Native Americans, indentured workers, slaves and immigrants ... both men and women who deserve to be honored for their sacrifice.
Every barrio was is home to these workers. Every barrio should be respected because it stands on the foundation and root of a truer history.
There is a story waiting on your grandmother's lips ... a story that the children growing up in Crow Village will not hear in school but needs to be taught. There is a story that whispers in every varrio and in the heart of every vato who walks the street. These stories should make one walk tall.

Sadly... these Barrios not varrios were started off as segregated communities and not "gangs". You idiots endanger and victimize those withing your own community and are too blind to see it. Bola de pendejos, you have no pride in your barrio, just in your own machismo and bravado to display your huevos. Act like men, and stop destroying the communities which you claim to have love for.
