WILMAS 13

WILMINGTON VARRIOS

EAST SIDE WILMAS
WEST SIDE WILMAS
NORTH SIDE WILMAS

THE VATO WEARING THE RED PENDLETON REPRESENTS EAST SIDE WILMAS, AND THE VATO WEARING THE BLUE REPRESENTS WEST SIDE WILMAS. . HYATT AND L STREET IS AT THE HEART OF EAST SIDE WILMAS.. AVALON BLVD DIVIDES ESW FROM WSW.. NORTH OF SEPULVEDA ALONG AVALON BLVD AS YOU HEAD INTO THE RAIL ROAD TRACKS NEIGHBORHOOD AREA THAT DIVIDE WILMAS FROM CARSON CAN BE CONSIDERED NORTH SIDE WILMAS, AND IN THE EAST SIDE ~> GHOST TOWN LIES NORTH OF PACIFIC COAST HIGHWAY. . WILMAS IS ONE OF THE BIGGEST, HARDEST AND OLDEST VARRIOS IN THE HARBOR AREA. . THEY WERE ONCE ONE HUGE VARRIO BUT WITH THE PASSAGE OF TIMES, DIFFERENT STROKES FOR DIFFRENT FOLKS HAVE DIVIDED UP THE VARRIO AND VARRIO UNITY BECAME ALL BUT DEAD.

ONE OF THE OLDEST CLIQUES IN WILMAS IS THE "CHAIN GANG", SOME OF THE REST OF THE ESW WILMAS ARE AS FOLLOWS . . .

L STREET
MAHAR STREET BOYS
HYATT STREET LOCOS
LUMBER YARD MALOS
GHOST TOWN LOCOS
BANNING PARK LOCOS

SOME OF THE WEST SIDE WILMAS CLIKAS ARE . . .
THE OLD C STREET LOCOS AND DANA LOCOS
AND ONE OF THE HARDEST CLIKAS OF ALL WSW TIMES
~> THE WILHALL PARK LOCOS (WHPLS) ALSO KNOWN
AS THE WEST SIDE WILHALL.

THIS OLD ASS PLACASO SHOWS THE EAST SIDE AND WEST SIDE HITTING UP "UNITED". THAT'S HOW THEY WERE NOT TOO LONG AGO . . .

SAD TO HAVE SO MANY WILMAS RAZA FALL VICTIM TO THEIR OWN!

THE SAN PEDRO VERSUS WILMAS RIVALRY IS ONE OF THE OLDEST IN THE HARBOR AREA, BUT THE WSW VERSUS ESW PLEITO HAS BEEN ONE OF THE DEADLIEST BEEFS IN THE SOUTH BAY AMONGST WILMEROS.. THE NORTH SIDE WILMAS VIRTUALLY DISAPEARED BY THE START OF THE EARLY EIGHTIES, BUT I HEAR THEY STILL HAVE HEADS REPRESENTING.. THE ORIGINAL GHOST TOWN LOCOS WERE NOT ALL PART OF ESW., THEY WERE NOT THE SAME GTLS WHICH ARE A CLIKA FROM ESW IN PRESENT TIMES, THEY WERE OTHER VATOS THAT DID NOT ALL CLAIM ESW VARRIO, THEY JUST SIMPLY CLAIMED GHOST TOWN AS THEIR NEIGHBORHOOD GROUNDS AND THEY SHARED THE TURF WITH BOTH EAST SIDE WILMEROS AND WITH THE EAST SIDE PAIN BLOODS WHICH CAN STILL BE FOUND IN THE LAND.. THE WEST SIDE WILMAS WILHALL PARK LOCOS CAME OUT IN THE LATER 70s AND WENT ON TO CREATE A BIG NAME FOR THEMSELVES. WHPLS ARE STILL CARRYING STRONG.. IN THE DANA PROJECTS THE WATERFRONT PIRU’S CLAIMED THEIR SET ALL THRU THE 70s AND 80s UNTIL THE PROJECTS WERE TORN DOWN IN THE 90s.. IN THE LATE 70s AND EARLY 80s THE EAST SIDE WAS KEEPING STRONG WITH THE OLD “L STREET” LOCOS AS THE BACKBONE AND THE MAHAR STREET BOYS AS THE YOUNGER HEAVY FIREPOWER GENERATION. THE MAHAR STREET BOYS HEADQUATERED AT MAHAR AND DENNI STREET, ALL ALONG THE FRONT OF THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL: WITH ONE HUGE CROWD AND A CRAZY ONE AT THAT. THE HYATT STREET LOCOS CAME NEXT IN THE MID EIGHTIES.

^ ^ ^ ^ THIS IS HOW WILMAS BREAKS DOWN . . .

OF COURSE THE DANA STRAND PROJECTS ARE GONE NOW . . .
AND THE GHOST TOWN NEIGHBORHOOD IS NOT WHAT IT ONCE WAS.

My first 18 years on this planet we're in the Dana Strand Projects (1976-1994) and I can't express how much I miss my old riggedy apartment. Although none of us living there had much, we all looked out for each other and we're TRULY a community! I remember someone stole my bike from my front porch (1127
"C" Street Apt.377 Wilmington, CA 90744-I'll NEVER forget) and the poor dude didn't make it down the block when a neighbor grabbed him by the neck and started beating him. I got my bike back and my mom threw an impromptu celebration.
I became aware of WSW vatos by the time I reached Kindergarten (1980) and to me they we're like Jedi knights protecting our neighborhood. The Vatos back then (I lived across from one of the ALL-TIME OG's from WSW; Leonard Espinsosa aka Smiley #1) didn't terrorize their OWN, didn't sell drugs, and PROTECTED the community from rival gangs or punk ass Police!
I now live in a suburb of Norwalk and my neighborhood isn't nowhere close to the tightness and unity of my old stomping grounds in Wilmas!

IT CAME A TIME WHEN WILMINGTON GOT ALL FUCKED UP IN UNITY. EAST SIDE WERE GOING AT IT BETWEEN LST AND MAHAR LS AROUND LATE 90'S. IT ENDED UP POLITICAL AND IT FINALLY ENDED BY ORDERS FROM THE TOP. WEST SIDE ENDED UP GOING ADDED WITHING ITSELF, YOU HAD THE PROJECT BOYS GOING AT IT WITH THE BLVD BOYS AROUND EARLY 2000. THESE WERE CLIQUES THAT WERE TRYING TO START UP BY YOUNGER GENERATIONS IN THE WEST SIDE. UNITY WILL NEVER BE THE SAME IN WILMINGTON.

wow, i grew up in wilmas on the WEST SIDE....since i was born i lived in the the DANA STRAND PROJECTS, and its true the PJ's were grimey and not so nice looking but it was such a close and tight neighborhood in its self...all the O.G.'s were very respectful the youngsters not so much cause they were all trying to make a name for themselves. my grandfather (who was never a gangster)was always respected by all the WEST SIDERS, and they always helpd him when they could. it wasnt till i went to h.s.(Banning H.S.)that i really learned about the EAST SIDERS, they were very close knit and backed each other up, but one thing i always hated about them is they always jumped u, they never knew how to fight one on one, it was like they were always scared to get an ass whoopin. but gtta give em props cause they always got the job done.anyways...WILMAS FOE LIFE= WS/ES/NS

I OFTEN WONDER WHAT HE WOULD LOOK LIKE TODAY AND WHAT HE WOULD BE DOING, ITS BEEN 18YEARS SINCE HE HAS BEEN GONE AND I STILL REMEMBER WHEN I MET HIM. I WAS SUPPOSE TO BE SET UP WITH ANOTHER GUY THE NIGHT WE MET, BUT WHEN MANUEL WALKED BY IT WAS LOVE AT FIRST SITE. HE WAS SO COOL AND I REMEMBER HIS FUNERAL IN A VERY PAINFUL WAY. I EVEN HAVE A TATTOO ON MY CHEST REPRESENTING HIM, IT SAYS "REASONS" 8-23-92 THATS THE DAY HE DIED AND OUR SONG BY EARTH, WIND AND FIRE. I LOVED HIS STRAIGHT OUT WAYS AND HIS ABILITY TO MAKE ME FEEL SO SPECIAL WHEN WE WERE TOGETHER. HE WAS JUST STRAIGHT CRAZY JUST LIKE HIS BROTHERS MARTIN,BURP,CHICANO AND JIMMY. GOOD TIMES I WILL NEVER FORGET MANUEL OR POLLO(SERGIO) FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE. POLLO WAS SO RESPECTFUL AND I WAS AT THE HOSPITAL HOLDING HIS HAND THE DAY HE DIED. IT WAS TRULY A SAD DAY FOR ME. POLLO USE TO MAKE ME LAUGH ESPECIALLY WHEN WE WERE BUDDED BIG TIME. THINGS WERE SO DIFFERENT THEN AND I DO MISS ALL THE GOOD TIMES. I ALSO REMEMBER JECKYL(FREDDY)I REMEMBER THAT ONE TIME WE WERE IN MY FRIENDS CAR AND WE WERE SMOKING BUD AND WHEN MY FRIEND CAME BACK AND RIPPED HER DOOR OPEN ALL CRAZY JECKYL HECKA SCREAMED LIKE A GIRL AND I WAS LAUGHING LIKE CRAZY. OH HOW I MISS ALL THOSE GOOD TIMES, I WISH I COULD BRING THEM ALL BACK, BUT I KNOW POLLO, MANUEL, PAPAS, LIL CHICO AND ALL THE GREAT HOMIES ARE HAVING THEIR GREAT TIMES IN HEAVEN. ALL OF YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN. I STILL HAVE MAD LOVE FOR YOU MANUEL AND I WISH I WOULD HAVE HAD MORE TIME WITH YOU CAUSE YOU WERE THE GREATEST. GOD BLESS ALL OF THEM AND THEIR FAMILIES AND PLEASE NONE OF YOU TAKE FOR GRANTED YOUR LIFE CAUSE IT HAPPENS SO FAST AND THEN YOUR GONE. I ALSO WANT TO SAY THAT MY BEST FRIEND OF ALL CESAR SANTIAGO FROM 'L' STREET I TRULY WISH I COULD FIND YOU AGAIN. I MISS YOU LIKE CRAZY ALSO AND PRAY FOR YOU ALL THE TIME. November 27, 2004

Everyone in Wilmington knows the dividing line. It slices this pocket-sized community in two, marking east and west. Flowing straight through the center, Avalon Boulevard is etched on the harbor town's psyche like sea-green tattoos on the biceps of some of its men.

It is the unofficial border that back in the 1950s separated whites from Latinos, the well-to-do from those living hand-to-mouth. The east-west divide endured for five decades, even as the population turned overwhelmingly Latino. Residents say they are from the east or west side of town. Gangs define themselves by the geography, calling themselves the West Side Wilmas and the East Side Wilmas.

In recent months, however, the generations-old boundary has begun to blur.

The impending opening of a long-fought-for recreation center will help bring parity to the underserved east, where residents often feared crossing Avalon into rival gang territory.

On both sides, common problems are under attack. After years of rampant illegal dumping, new anti-nuisance laws are being enforced. And the largest gang injunction in Los Angeles has brought a newfound sense of security to the thousands of residents menaced by gang life.

The results are evident. Graffiti are minimal and crime is down. Gang members rarely gather in public view. Families and children play in parks until sunset.

Wilmington's first farmers market began peddling produce and serving up crepes in September, and a new park dedicated last week marks the first step toward waterfront redevelopment.

"I've worked here for the last 25 years, and I've never seen such a surge of community pride and optimism and activism," said Patrick Wilson, an officer on the Wilmington Neighborhood Council and president of the local chamber of commerce. "I think Wilmington's headed toward a renaissance."

To outsiders, little distinguishes the east from the west. On one side of Avalon are Mexican restaurants, pupuserias and strip malls. On the other side of Avalon, more Mexican restaurants, pupuserias and strip malls. On the east side of town, large families crowd small, colorful houses. On the west side, it's much the same.

Looming over it all are the massive cranes and walls of containers of the Port of Los Angeles. The economic engine of the region, the port also is this town's nemesis, burdening it with the byproducts of world trade: industrial junkyards, heavy truck traffic, noise and air pollution.

Wilmington, annexed to Los Angeles in 1909 along with San Pedro for the port, has long served as an entry place for Latino immigrants. About 80% of its 56,000 residents are Latino, according to the 2000 U.S. census. The median per capita income is $12,435, about 40% lower than the city's average. About one-third of children between 11 and 17 live in poverty, and 55% of the community's adults have not finished high school.

Both sides of town share a recent history of hard times, including the closing of major employers. Along with the port, canneries in San Pedro and the Long Beach Naval Shipyard had long provided immigrants and others with decent jobs. The shipyard closed in 1997, taking 3,000 jobs with it. Several canneries also closed in the 1990s.

That one community, which can be driven from north to south in four minutes, could subdivide itself doesn't make much sense -- unless you grew up there. Lucy Moreno, a sixth-generation Wilmington resident raised on the east side, speaks of the west side as if it were a prettier twin. The west has better houses, the teen post, the Boys and Girls Center.

Anonymous said...

"The west side had everything where we had nothing," said Moreno, whose first name is for Lucy Banning, the daughter of Wilmington's founder. "When I was a little girl, the only thing we had was Banning Park."

"I don't know why, but no one ever fought for the east side, so you don't know what this means to us now," she said of the new community center. "This is the most important thing that has happened for the children on the east side that I can remember."

The east side waited 50 years for a recreation center. Longtime activist Donna Etheridge, like Moreno and others, said gangs would not have had such an enduring grip on generations of youth if there had been other recreational opportunities.

"People died while waiting for this center to be built," Etheridge said.

In 1996, $3.3 million was approved for Wilmington as part of a citywide parks bond measure. After a dispute over the size and location of the project, City Councilwoman Janice Hahn guided it to a 1.2-acre parcel at Sanford and Opp streets. The 6,500-square-foot building -- with a gymnasium, full basketball court and meeting rooms -- is scheduled to open early next year. The new center may eliminate a sore point between east and west, but many communitywide issues remain, Hahn said.

"The pollution doesn't stop between east and west," Hahn said. "This onslaught of crime and pollution and trucks and crummy streets affects all Wilmington."

City-installed cameras in notorious dumping zones now catch scofflaws on both sides. "Regardless of whether it's done in the east or west, the message now is that we're watching," Hahn said.

Along with increased code enforcement is intensified law enforcement. Last March, City Atty. Rocky Delgadillo obtained the toughest permanent gang injunction in Los Angeles, making it illegal for 250 gang members to congregate in public. Though some say police often target Latino youths with tattoos, police say that overall crime in September dropped 20%, compared with the same month last year.

Homicides fell by a third and car theft dropped about the same. Officers made record numbers of arrests, 1,000 more than the previous year.

"The East Side Wilmas and West Side Wilmas gangs really were very much of a plague, ruining things," said Harbor Division Capt. Pat Gannon.

In 2000, 39 of the 45 homicides in Wilmington were attributed to the gangs.

"But if you put the right bad guys in jail, your crime is going to go down," he said

Police also attribute the drop in crime to the demolition of the Dana Strand housing project in 2002. It had become a stubborn source of drug-dealing and other crime, Gannon said.

Art Zepeda, a former gang outreach worker, grew up in east Wilmington, lives on the west side and has always floated between both. In the 1990s he helped broker a peace treaty that lasted two years. This is not the first time, he said, that gangs have been brought under control. The enduring problem, however, is the lack of jobs for youths who try to leave gang life. An injunction, he said, will not affect gangs' recruiting in Wilmington schools.

But Zepeda and many residents said Wilmington feels safer. "Before the injunction, by 6 or 7 p.m., the families would be going home," Roger Jangaou said as he coached a girls' softball team at Wilmington Park. "The gang members would be out there sitting around while the girls played," intimidating them.

The menace has not entirely disappeared. Shortly before sunset, Sgt. Michael Porter cruised past three suspected gang members lounging in a driveway. One looked at Porter and raised a beer to his lips in a bold salute. Porter kept going but radioed the violation to other officers, who later swung by the house.

Not from any Wilma's set , just want to say when I was growing up there in the 70's and early 80's it was one of the best times of my life. I remember going to Hawaiian ave elementary , walking home from school and no one ever bothered me. I use to live on some apartments on Wilmington ave , a couple a blocks away from the old projects. I remember in the summers my friends and I would walk to the liquor store on the corner of Anaheim and Wilmington , or the second hand store behind it that always had awesome used toys. I moved out in '82 , pops lost his job at Todd Ship Yard on the San Pedro water front , moved where his next job took us. I'll always carry Wilmington in my heart , a true working class neighborhood that has seen better times but always memorable. Thanks for the memories.

I remember walking down the alleys and walking across ghost town and never had a problem its not as bad as people say it is i miss my home town i miss walking through the alleys and all my older homeboys from Lst and my dad who always fought to give me a better life and showing me that there is a better way than to the madness i was into. Still got lots of respect for all my fallen homeboys all the soldiers OG's and peewees were just taking care of the family. I live In the Midwest now but Ill never forget wilmas.

I am not a part of any of these hoods, varios, or gang's! I LOVE WILMINGTON, CALIFORNIA because I grew up all over Wilmington! I was never influenced by my surroundings, I was me, a Samoan kid who loved my City, my neighbors, my friends, my hood! It was home to me!
I love this blog because it speaks of the truth of where I grew up!
If I was to ever move back to California, I'd rather be in my hood! WILMINGTON CALIFORNIA!
People were genuine, caring and loving! Yes we did look out for each other! Neighbors would borrow sugar, flour, or tortillas fir that matter!
I LOVED WHERE I LIVED!!

Wilmas Has been around for quite a long time and at one time we all respected each other and got along and today there are quite of few of us still live by this love for each other. The OG cliques are Seko Brothers on Denni n Sanford, Center boys on Sanford n L Street And the Lumber Yard Boys on L Street. You had the Turks, Green Fence, Tic Tock Locos, Don Street boys, Wilhall,600 Block Loco's on Lagoon,Fig Town, at first you had the Hyatt Boys than it changed to Hyatt St Loco's, Mahar Loco's, Ghost town Loco's, Calle Elle Loco's, and of course CHAIN GANG LOCO"S there were many of them and there are a few that still exist. So let' all just get along with each other. We are stronger that way.
