Sotel 13 is an old West Los Varrio, which dates back to the 1950's.

The Varrio name is derived from the West L.A. community/neighborhood of  SAWTELLE

SOTEL is very much in line with the old school Pachuco way of baptizing their barrio names with; for example..

WILMAS for Wilmington
LONGO for Long Beach
PACAS for Pacoima
BOLEN for Baldwin Park
SAN GRA for San Gabriel
so on and so on..

Sawtelle was always a mix of lower and middle-income residents but it was never a barrio as we tend to perceive places like East Los or Sal Si Puedes in San Jo. Their neighborhood consisted of primarily lower-income housing, but due to real estate values jumping up, they are slowly losing their streets to richer folks moving in and buying up more and more properties. There are still a lot of Latino residents in that area despite the gentrification and re-development but little by little, they're being pushed out.

Sotel has always been a fairly small but tight knit Varrio. That's their strength. I can't imagine Sotel the Varrio dying out. Some other cliques and clubs have come and gone in that area, like the West Side Crazies, West LA Trippers, West LA Party Boyz, West Los 13 and West Side Locos 13, but Sotel has always survived.

Sotel started out in the 1950's as Thee Falcons de Sotel, which was more of a Lowrider club. It is said that in the 1960's the Chicano cliques of the West Los (Santa Monica, West L.A., Venice, Culver City/Mar Vista and Sawtelle) caught on to the East L.A. cholo style and reinvented themselves as Varrios. Thee Falcons became SOTEL 13 and some of the other cliques became Venice 13, Santa 13, Via, etc. Most Sotel Homies live around the Brockton Avenue and Norris Terry elementary school neighborhood, centered mostly around Stoner Park, at least that is "historically". They're a very spread out Varrio, so you will only catch them together only at their hang out spots. Their main click now is the Diablos and they usually wear the San Diego Padres lid, which stand for Sotel Diablos.

I remember reading about this a while back in some magazine about that gentrification pedo that is going down out there a long with places like venice and santa monica. That jale is going down everywhere as well. There are whole nieghborhoods out here in Houston that have been eradicated.I'm talking varrios being demolished and new townhomes put in thier place.Of course la gente is being pushed out to make way for these changes. That racial makeup is changing as well.Along with this property taxes are going up and most people have to fight them every year.It has started in my varrio as well.To me it's only a matter of tiempo before it seest to exist.

That's true, time don't wait on nobody, and change is the only thing in life you can truly bank on. Gentrification does take its toll all around though, not just the Barrios if you really want to look at it from another perspective. It's just that typically us Raza tend to be more nostalgic about things like that. Hence the reason why it is so ingrained in our folkloric minds.

Yes sir point taken.

I believe you both make good points. I am a son of an ex Culver City gang member and have grown up in the Sotel 13 Neighborhood. My mother grew up around the main Sotel 13 barrio at Stoner Park. In my high school yrs I used to run around with Sotel at times on Sawtelle Blvd. I slowly would watch members leave and move further away and it almost seems like everyone is moving to the same direction. We are all being pushed East bound to just about the same areas. We constantly fight over areas of LA that don't even belong to us and while this is going on, the "MAN" has come right under us and taken what we thought was ours. Now what is left? Just our thoughts and memories of was once something we could call Hispanic or Latino heritage. We've become accustomed to greed and doing things the easy way and now we will pay for it. It is in our best interest to show our children that because you are born into a situation that you can’t better for yourself and others around you is wrong. I am just like you. I value the things that mean most to me friends, family’s and most important my pride. Things aren't meant to be just given to us and when they are we should cherish them. Because like they always say “you never know what you got until it's gone.” On that note there will be some that agree and some that don't. But please by all means feel free to comment on any of the information I have stated. Like I said I'm just another Hispanic/Latino born in LA that slowly sees no answer but to leave all he knows behind.

ANONYMOUS SAYS YOU MISSED A FEW CLIKAS IN THE SOTEL NEIGHBORHOOD. BACK IN THE EARLY 70'S AT STONER PARQUE A CLIKA BY THE NAME (LOS CASUALS DE SOTEL) WAS FORMED. PART OF THE INITIATION PROCESS WAS TO BE JUMPED IN TO THE CLIKA BY GOING THROUGH (THE MILL). THE HOMEBOYS WOULD LINE UP ON BOTH SIDES FACING EACH OTHER WHILE THE NEWEST MEMBER WOULD HAVE TO MAKE IT FROM ONE END TO THE OTHER WHILE GETTING HIT BY PUNCHES FROM BOTH SIDES. SOME OF THEM DIDN'T FAIR TO WELL GOING THROUGH THE MILL. IN CASE YOU DONT REMEMBER SOTEL HAD A LOT OF BIG HOMEBOYS. IF YOU'RE STILL TO YOUNG TO RECALL LOS CASUALS THEY EVEN HAD THEIR ON WIND BREAKERS WITH OLD ENGLISH WRITING ON THE BACK OF THEM. WITH LOS CASUALS DE SOTEL. ALSO ON THE FRONT IN HANDWRITING THEY HAD THERE PLAQUIASO. JUST A LIL HISTORY FOR YOU MR. PALO. ALSO I REMEMBER THE HOMEBOYS THAT PUT STONER PARK ON THE MAP BY PAINTING A FIRME MURAL AT STONER PARK BY THE POOL. THEY EVEN USE TO THROW RECORD HOPS EVERY WEEKEND FOR A COUPLE OF YEARS. THAT WAS THE GOOD OLD DAYS WHEN THERE WERE LOWRIDERS EVERYWHERE IN THE VARRIO. CON MUCHO RESPETO!

I'll remember this next time I go eat Japanese food there lol.

In all seriousness, listen to KrewZ. He is being realistic about everything. I grew up in the area. If you honestly think it was better for society back then compared to now, something is systematically wrong with you.

"It is in our best interest to show our children that because you are born into a situation that you can’t better for yourself and others around you is wrong" - mad respect

There's a Los Casuals/Sotel mural seen in a Hollywood movie, that dates and documents some culture that has meaning to me. I am skateboarder who lived in Sotel hood c 1984-5 and rented from the Kessler's, notorious aging German slumlords and actually very tolerant to poor SMC students like myself, who often rented out burned out vans and chicken sheds to desperate folk by the week. I remember the grocery truck that traveled around where we bought our staples like dried beans and rice and fresh tortillas, popular with many illegals who avoided la migra and cops in general. The addicts and those of us with police warrants liked the food truck for that reason, too. I owned several early 60s ford falcons later because I saw how good they looked when they were treated right by the locals. I also remember people kept pigs and chickens and goats in their backyards and it was a very family oriented place. The telephone booth at Rae's diner was my "office" to do business and take calls. We'd sit in the booth closest to the phone and hope we heard it ring back. The Dogtown skate crew famously (and I feel, respectfully) appropriated a lot of lowrider culture around this time, and so I was familiar with the style of graffiti. Recently I watched a 70s movie about gamblers called CALIFORNIA SPLIT (1974) and in a scene where star Elliot Gould plays street basketball with some teens, you can BRIEFLY see a Los Casuals mural with the crucifix in a park that is probably either Stoner Park or else one of the schools nearby. I caught it and did a little photoshop work on a frame grab to make as much of it visible in one image as possible, here.

First of all you spelt the school wrong it's Nora Sterry. .
I know it's over a year since this Article was printed..
The reason I'm here now is because there is a group on Facebook and someone put SOTEL. Some people didn't know what it was so me and someone else explained.
I'm not a member of SOTEL, but I have cousins and my brother are ..
Back in the late 1970's and 80's I grew up there. They got alot of respect for my family and still do today..
Many of us moved out of the area, but didn't stop SOTEL from not hanging out at stoner park. They still get together there play some softball bring their lowriders and Harleys kicking back..
I would walk to the park alot as a little girl. Funny thing, my mom would make me go to the park looking for my brother she even would make me go to his homeboy house..
Stoner now just doesn't look the same. The pool wall is paint with water turtles and the toddler pool was removed built into a skateboard area..
I sure miss those ol days and all those events. . West Los in that area was always safe to walk around as a kid. Almost everyone knew eachother too..
