BARRIO RED STEPS
BARRIO LOGAN aka BARRIO RED STEPS is what the West Side of the Chicano Community of Logan Heights is called.
Barrio Logan Red Steps was split off from the rest of LOGAN HEIGHTS when Interstate 5 was constructed and divided the community in two halves.
El Barrio Logan is home to the Logan Heights RED STEPS Ganga, which is a clika of the much larger BARRIO LOGAN HEIGHTS GANG. In addition to the Red Steps clique, LH in present times is composed of the cliques LH30TA, LH33RD, LH13LS and the LH Clika located in East Side San Diego. Another prior olden times clika were the LH32 Luckys which is no longer active.
Barrio Logan Red Steps had its origins with an earlier gang named LOS CHERRIES way back in the 1950s. Los Cherries took their name from some big ass painted Red Steps of this huge house which used to be on the north side of Island Avenue, between 24th & 25th Streets. This house with the painted red steps was located in the area where today’s current pedestrian sky-bridge crosses-over Interstate 5, between Logan Avenue & Crosby Street (re-named Cesar Chavez in 1995).
When Interstate 5 was built in 1963, the house & the Steps were torn down; nevertheless, the new 1960s generation of Cherries adopted the name Red Steps for their new Clika as the older generation of Cherries faded into history.
By the time when Chicano Park was created in 1969/70, the Red Steps clika had long before already become fully incorporated into the united Barrio Logan Heights Gang. This Greater LHTS Gang by uniting over the years between the late 1950s & early 1960s, all the gangs in the area like Los OSOS, Los LOBOS, Los CHICANOS, Los COYOTES and Los CHERRIES; created One United LH Barrio. . . (Note: In the middle of Chicano Park today, there is a mural that reads “BARRIOS UNIDOS LOGAN”. This is said to be in reference not so much as to Chicano Barrios in general, but more indicative of Logan’s UNITED Varrios). The old Cherries Gang thus gave way to the new LH Red Steps clika which has remained named as such onto present times, and it also has become one of the strongest Gang-Cliques all around. The RED STEPS have with time, added a new younger sub-clique to their ranks called Chicano Park Boys (CPB) and their confederates, the Feeling So Irie Boys Krew (FSI).
The RED STEPS Barrio is concurrent with the boundaries of Barrio Logan itself; the boundaries being one and the same; 16th Street/Commercial Street to the north, 32nd Street to the south, Harbor Drive/Old 101 Highway to the west and Interstate 5 to the east. The Red Steps Barrio is also home to the well-known famed Chicano Park (CP aka CHP) which was built right under the Coronado Bay Bridge (constructed in 1969/70). Chicano Park criss+crosses the RS neighborhood through several streets, semi-dividing the Barrio in half with its many bridge concrete pillars.
This is a small story of Barrio Logan Heights Red Steps as has been understood by yours truly in small-talk conversations here and there, as well as from the received input from some of you out there. I hope that Homies from Logan can visit with us on the Brown Kingdom and speak for themselves as to their history and correct me on any honest mistakes committed.

I once heard from one Logan Heights gang member that the name Red Steps came from all the blood that has been shed in there neighborhood. I spoke to a gang member from the gang Lomas 26 which is a rival gang to Logan Heights and he confirmed the same "story" to the reference of Red Steps. This current story of how the name came about could be due to a lack of historical knowledge. I know one veterano from National City (San Diego)who is about 60 to 70 years old and was recently deported to Mexico. If I ever run into him again I can ask him about the history and get back to this site.
Nel ese, never heard the story like that before. Pretty much every one I've talked to agrees that where they got the name was from the painted Red Steps off this one big house that was demolished when the freeway went up. There's some variations in the story, but overall it all ends back up atht bir house with the red steps next to this big wall.
I dont know about taht story about the blood shed, but alot of out of bounders do get their wigz split and shed blood in the n13hberhood. LHX111CE LCS 1RO

So what's the history of LH30TA?
Modern Day Warrior Battles Chicano-on-Chicano Violence
The murals of Chicano Park, located on Logan Avenue under the I-5 and Coronado Bridge underpasses, have provided Barrio Logan residents with crash courses in Mexican culture since the 1970s. A proud Aztec warrior guards teenagers skateboarding on and around the kiosco, a concrete stage in the center of the park. A serene Virgin de Guadalupe keeps vigil over parents shuffling their children to the bathrooms, and larger-than-life faces of revolutionaries serve as reminders of past struggles to families eating their lunches.
The work of educating young Latinos about their culture, though, is not being left solely in the hands of these painted images. This barrio also has another, more animated, guardian, and his name is Lucky "Two Tears" Morales. Every Sunday afternoon, Mr. Morales, the 37 year-old founder of the anti-gang violence group Los Indios del Barrio, communes with these murals before setting off on a 5-mile "Unity Walk" to National City's Highland Avenue. He has not missed a single Sunday since he began this march in 1996. Sometimes alone, but more often with gang members, area youth, parents and community activists at his side, Mr. Morales walks to help fulfill his life's mission: to educate young Latinos about the "difference between the reality and the illusion of Chicano pride" and to end Chicano-on-Chicano gang violence.
"I grew up around drugs and violence, so I know what these kids are facing. I know what they have to go through," says Mr. Morales, who grew up in a household ravaged by drug and alcohol abuse. His mother is currently living on the streets as a result of her addictions, and two of his sisters are currently enrolled in rehabilitation programs. "I was able to keep my head above water and grew up managing to stay positive, and I feel that it is my mission to help other kids do the same."
Lucky "Two Tears" Morales does not look like your average community leader. His left cheek is tattooed with two tear drops, signifying the loss of an older brother who died as a child and the loss of his father who walked out on the family when Mr. Morales was 10 years old. A large spider covers the left side of his neck, and tribal bands and feathers circle his calves. On the Unity Walk, he wears an all black uniform, including black combat boots and a black and white bandana. Often, "war paint" covers his face - stripes of red and white crossing the bridge of his nose and spilling onto his cheeks. He carries a walking stick decorated with feathers or banners and waves a large Mexican flag. He is a Chicano Park mural come to life.
"I have the gift of being able to connect with teenagers of all ages. I do not mean just Latino kids either, all kids seem to be drawn to me. They treat me with respect. It's very rare that you find adults trying to make a difference on a grassroots level, especially in an inner-city environment," says Mr. Morales, who is a Childcare Worker at New Alternative, Inc., a non-profit organization that places abused and neglected children in homes throughout the county. Dedicating every aspect of his life to our youth, he has counseled 13 to 17 year-old boys for the past two years.
Although Mr. Morales, a husband and father to three children of his own, spends up to seven hours each Sunday walking through Barrio Logan, handing out fliers to curious observers and taking time to talk with and to "lecture" those interested in hearing his message, he receives no monetary compensation for his work.
Instead, he finds his rewards in each teenager who turns away from street violence. There are those who recognize the value of Mr. Morales' work, though.
On Wednesday, April 4th, he was given Channel 10's Leadership Award which is bestowed upon San Diegans who are "dedicated to improving our community."
"I do not do this for the awards, but getting this [Channel 10 award] made me realize that it's about time that somebody who really tries to make a difference in the barrio is acknowledged. Sometimes it feels like we are the forgotten people out here," says Mr. Morales. His serious expression cracks into a smile, losing focus for a moment as he watches a few children playing in the Chicano Park playground.
His first exposure to gang violence came in 1981, when two of his close friends were ambushed and fatally shot. In 1988, as a direct result of these shootings, Mr. Morales began his mission to "stop the violence and increase the peace" by becoming a neighborhood youth worker for the Barrio Youth Center in Barrio Logan, an area of San Diego known for its high gang population.
Mr. Morales recites a long list of the gangs in and around the area as well as rough estimates of their sizes. After explaining that it would be hard to give an exact count, he estimates the OTNC (Old Town National City) gang to have as many as 600 or more members, the Logan Heights 30th Street gang to have close to 300 members, the Barrio Sherman and Barrio Shelltown gangs each with between 200 and 300 members, the Logan Heights Red Steps with 100 members, the Logan Heights 33rd Street gang with just under 100 members and the Logan Heights 13 which is, as he puts it, "very small."
"We are out here trying to make a difference because we know that, among all races of children, it is the children of Mexican descent who are the leading victims of violence by one another," says Mr. Morales, explaining that society's belief that African-American gangs suffer more from internal violence is a myth. He classifies African-American gangs as being "materialistic," fighting over things such as guns, money and drugs, and classifies Chicano gangs as being "territorial," fighting violent wars over neighborhoods, blocks and even corners.
"Many people in society think that all gang members join a gang. In Chicano families, many kids are born into gang families. It is the only life they know. In some cases, their grandparents were part of gangs. They grow up around dysfunction and drug addiction, and they look up to uncles and brothers who are in and out of prison," says Mr. Morales, getting to the root of why outreach to San Diego gangs can be so difficult. "These examples are all these kids know of what it means to become a man. They believe that being a Chicano means to become lawless and incarcerated."
Although there are days when waking up to headlines announcing yet another instance of Chicano-on-Chicano gang violence threatens to take the wind out of his Mexican flag, Mr. Morales says that the encouragement that he receives from the community helps to keep him inspired. He recalls an encounter that he recently had with a grateful couple who stopped him along one of his Unity Walks. They talked about their children and thanked him for providing their community with a positive example of what it means to be Chicano.
"Chicanoism is a way of life. It is acknowledging and having respect for our ancestors, our youth and our women. It is about respecting our elders and our Raza, no matter where they are from," says Mr. Morales. He runs his eyes over the murals above and around him before stopping to focus on a few young men. "If I can teach these things, I have really done something."
Chicano Park
by Lucky Two Tears Morales
Giant colorful tattooed arms of concrete and steel
sprout forth open hands
to grasp tightly onto the suspended roadways
over a piece of land,
small but sacred
in which a single race of people gather together to celebrate
an indigenous unity.
Tourists of fluorescent skin, descendants of those who have
conquered, enslaved, imposed
their laws upon my brothers and sisters,
come again from parts of Europe to steal our mural art
with fast clicking cameras
manufactured in the land of the rising sun
duplicating our personal tributes to the spirit of life itself.
In the park's corazon stands the quiosco
a stage—but much more a temple—
pointing in the four directions of Mother Earth
the four faces of Man:
the physical, the mental, the emotional, the spiritual
faint ghostly images of ancient Mexican warriors
from once upon a time
can be seen performing ritualistic ceremonial dances
in the mists of cedar and sage smoke.
These theatrical entities tell stories of an army
with white faces—half man, half tortoise
carrying long sticks that spit fire
claiming to have come in peace, but in a short time
placed the earth people in bondage,
raped their women, butchered their children
then reproduced their own offspring.
As the night falls across the barrio
like a mother gently covering her sleeping infant,
homeless Chicano tecatos, Red Step boys,
San Diego gang unit detectives
and so-called illegal aliens
laugh sarcastically at messages of
"no drugs"
"respeto"
painted on the restrooms' front entranceway.
A veteran of black-tar heroin addiction enjoys
a rush of distorted dreams
as he lays on the dew-layered grass, his weary head
propped up on an old worn-out backpack
filled with his personal possessions
a pair of shoes, contraband and bullshit.
Echoes of annual events past can be heard
in the winds of the late hours
eerie sounds of laughter, music, cheers and great speeches
by the one and only Corky Gonzales
bounce off the tall cement structures
as if these solid formations were telling incomplete stories
of a modern-day Stonehenge
each one holding an unlocked mystery of its own.
Que viva, Chicano Park!
past...present...future...all the way to the bay
to city officials and others our little section of holy ground
is merely a waste of time and effort
a thorn in the side of progress, an eye sore
right smack in the middle of Border Town, Califas, USA.
Let's march on raza, let's put those individuals
who call us Hispanic in a cardiac arrest type panic
Let's make Aztlan live again!
"SO WHAT ABOUT THE LUCKIES, WERE THEY FORMALLY A PART OF LH OR WERE THEY THEIR OWN? AND WHAT'S THE DEAL WITH THE 32ND TOKERS? I asked my uncle about this he grew up in Logan around the time that 26ST, 30ST, 32ST, and 35ST came up.
The OG gang from Logan Heights was just called "Logan," or "Varrio Logan." This was in the 50's after all of the "Los Gangs" (as in Los Coyotes, Los Osos, not as in LA). Logan Red Steps came around in the 60's. They were named after the red steps of one of the Victorian houses on the corner one of the 20 streets (and Commercial?) . That house is still supposed to be around, but some homie above said it was demolished.
30TA came up next around the 70's in the Memorial neghborhood, but they still claimed Logan Heights. My uncle said that RS and 30th used to beef hard at first. RS considers all of Barrio Logan, Logan Heights, and Memorial theirs. They ended up in a truce since they had common enemies (Sherman, Market, Shelltown), and both repped the same neighborhood.
Around the late 70's/early 80's a few new gangs popped up in Logan. Logan 26St Luckies, Logan 32nd Street, and Logan 35th Street. 26th Street Luckies got shut down by Red Steps and 32nd Street was shut down by 30th Street. this was all over territory encroachment issues. My uncle said that soem of the 26th Streeters hopped into RS, and some of the 32nd Streeters hopped into 30th.
Logan 35 was short lived. They held territory from Wabash and National to 35th and National. They died off because they didn't get the OK from RS or 30th to set up, and their hood was right up against Shelltowns hood. Shelltown 36th Street gang (if you don't beleive me about ST36, ask some ST veteranos) basically ran LH35 off. Ever since then Wabash (now I-15) has been the borderline between LH gangs and ST gangs.
Logan 13 came up from a bunch of vagabonds that lived all over logan Heights and Memorial. The vagabonds got the OK to start up a new gang and the just wnet with LHX3
My uncle doesn't know the history about Logan 33rd though.
You can ask some Logan G's about the clicka issue. I always was under the impression that they were all seperate gangs that repped LH.
Logan Heights Red Steps (AKA Logan Red Steps): LHRS, LRS, RSLS, 1819
Clicka: Chicano Park Boys
Logan Heights 30th Street (AKA Logan 30, Calle 30TA Locos): LH30,30TA, C30LS, XXXTA
Clikas: Memorial Park Boys, Clay Block Siders
Logan Heights 33rd Street (AKA Logan 33, Calle 33 Locos): LH33, C33LS, XXXIII
Logan Heights 13 (AKA Logan 13): LH13, LHX3
It's the same with Shelltown. 38th and Gamma Boys consider themselves completely seperate gangs, but they rep the same neighborhood, and they are allied with each other.
Shelltown 38th Street (AKA Shelltown 38): ST38, XXXVIII, 3V3
Clickas: Oceanview Park, Dead End Boys
Shelltown Gamma Boys (AKA Gamma Street): STGBS, GBST
Sherman too? I think 20 and 27 consider themselves seperate gangs.
Sherman 20th Street (AKA Sherman 20, Calle 20 Locos): SM20, C20LS
Sherman 27th Street (AKA Sherman 27, Calle 27 Locos): SM27, C27LS
clicka: Grant Hill Park Locos
In the Southbay, it's almost like the opposite. It seems like OTNC considers IBS, EBS, OBS, GTS as clickas of one gang. Same with the clickas of VCV (GLS,NBLS, SBLS, GST), Del Sol (DELS,RCLS,SCLS,DSR,DSV) Sidro (LTS,MLS,TLS,VLS), Nestor (YGS,CHS, LTS) and Imperial (RKS, LTS, DKS). \
I'm not sure about Otay though. it seems like RLS, RBLS, and 13 BS all roll seperatley. Maybe they consider themselves three seperate gangs that claim Otay.
About "32nd Street Tokers." They didn't claim Logan, but they were allied with Logan. They were started in the late 80's/early 90's by a Compton Varrio Tokers transplant. I think that they just went by "Southeast Tokers," not by "32nd Street Tokers." They used to hit up SETKS. I think they were also allied with Southeast Lokos.
I wish more G's would post on here so that they can enlighten us on things like this.

Anyone knows what happen to ese calish or ish?
Barrio logan or red steps is its own little town. funny they claim the southeast city but yet they're not officialy labled on the map. Its east of the 5 where southeast begins. Maybe many dont know about the click they tried starting "Irving st Gang" and they would even hit up on walls "Logan Heights Red Steps Irving St Gang Connection" its a fact. About the FSI Boys they wernt no logan click or set. A few steppers would kick it with them but they were never known as a logan gang or click. The 32nd st Tokers WERE on 32nd and they Did claim 32nd st. They posted on a deadend st a block in from Imperial ave going towards market st. They scaddered through out the southeast once they began gettin' smoked on 32nd..they died fast. 32 SKA are not from Logan and theyre based over by market st. Funny now a days many cats kick it with fools from other gangs, when back in the day that was not allowed..atleast in Logan. I heard from many OG's that the cherry gang originated its name from when they kicked it in front of some pad, which had cherry trees. Im not from red steps and dont keep up much on their history but story says the red steps name came about from some painted steps they used to kick it at, some say its where the Logan Clinic is now located (not sure). As for 30ta there has never been any other click as of memorial park boys or anything else. Its just simply the 30ta Mob..and yes we are the only cats in san diego who uses Mob and not Lokos etc. To me...the Logan Click up in east san diego is not part of Logan Heights and would never be concidered. Rumors say Lips from red steps was one of them who started it? As of another homie who began Logan Heights Bonner st. up in north hollywood. There's too much history and could go for days on hoods and not only about logan or red steps but let say shelltown..many cats from other citys dont even know they affiliate with and bang together with the bloods. Ive caught many many back in the day tryin'a bang together on Logan. They even concider them self bloods and sport the color red.
Your homeboy Gabriel Vargas is in a PC yard and is active in homesexual activity...Hes from the red steps. Palabra.

was wondering if anybody else had heard of the original red steps members? like 1960s era..... I have family stories but looking for more.....was it 4 brothers and their friends who started it? I know in the 40s in juvinille hall people were repp. logan hights but what about the 50s and 60s? If my family stories are true the steps are still there but a lg parking lot is where the house once stood. have to ask my Tio the exact location......
All this talking names is bullshit . True homes don't talk . We live it
You got to stop all the talking
Stop taking you for. Do you know what incrimination is
Homie is right. There is to much name dropping on these pages. Keep it general and hate free. its OK to talk about hood history as long as you don's drop names. Its should be all about varrio history and carnalismo not about spreading names and news. Speaking of original Logan gangs what about all these old clickas
Logan Cherry Gang, Logan Luckies, Logan Levi Gang, Logan Counts, Los Amigos, Los Lobos, Los Chicanos, Los Gallos, The Valley, Blue Velvets, Night Riders, 25th Street, 32nd Street, The Spiders, Black Angels, Yellow Jackets
Some of these old gangs included whites and blacks and most of them hey fueded with Market Street and OTNC and The Mutes from National City.
Chicano park is red steps homies for you that don't know that!I miss those days in the park when all the varrios in s.d cruise every Sunday alot of Hainan from everywhere. SOUTHEAST TOKEROS 13 SAN DIEGO, LONER REPRESENTING MY CLICKA ALWAYS THERE FOR MY BOYS IN THE STREETS AND LOCK DOWN IN THE STATED OR DOWN THE SOUTH OF THE BORDER. RIP MY BOYS CHUKO AND CASPER.
Fuck Leche and their clicks they claim. Rot In Pieces to Chakal. Bones. Loco. Sparky. Greens. Necio. Smurf. Serio. Crow. Goofy. Brujo. Menace. Juvenile. Vulture. Downer. Lil Cat. Lil Wino. Casper. Lepo. Stoner. Chucko. Terko. Lil Brown. Rowdy. Green Eyes. Pocho. Clever. Traviesio. Drowzy. Diablo. Lil Profe. Lil Viper. Flannery. Baby Dusty. Wacko. Sneaky. Eazy. Enano. Jawbreaker. Vicious. and the rest of them Lecheros we took out. I swear all of them foos from Red Steps, 30th Street, 33rd Street, and Trece are nothing but bitches and tricks that keeps on getting smoked by the Almighty Insane UnKnowns Nation. Fuck all my rivals that's my slogan, I'm still yelling out "Logan Killers! Unknown Love!" All day every day as I'm walking through your hood putting in work for the IUKS by putting putos like you Lecheros in coffins.
That's a lot of bodies to count. However, how many of your homies have been smoked in return for those losses. I have lived in South East all my life and have watched a lot of shit go down and even have had to deal with a few clowns myself from time to time, nothing new. But when all truth be told, all of you die pathetically as a bunch of mentally retarded has-beens. You've yet to figure out that joining hands with another man doesn't make you strong, it just makes you a misguided poor and reliant FAGGIT. In life it's only what YOU OWN and CONTROL that MATTERS. Claiming a street, ally or park bench will get you nowhere. As proof of this, certain gangs have been completely and effortlessly erased without firing a single bullet - Woptown, Lomas, 12th Street, Normal Heights, Sur 13 NPLS, Lemon Grove, Spring Valley, Imperial Beach, Mission Bay, Linda Vista, Claremont, Encinitas, Carlsbad) and the list will continue to grow as investors and whites continue to buy up the Real Estate in the areas where you live and raise the rent on you to prices your families can't afford. Most of you are so poor that the houses some of you do live in are falling apart anyways. In another 10-20 years Logan, Sherman and Shelltown will be no longer a place of RETARD habitation. I advise all of you who read this post to reconsider what you say you represent, and put your time and effort into acquiring knowledge and skills that will bring you and your families out of poverty. Your only other option is death or prison.
The fk you talkin about weenie. Woptown, LV, Lomas 26, North Park LS, LGLS, SVLS, IMP13, MBLS, CLMTX3, ENCSS, CMLS are all still around.
REST IN PEACE BIG LUCKY RED STEPS 1819 CONTROLA TODO!
wtf is iuk? never heard that shit in my life sounds like a tagging club lol
I grew up in LHRS in the 80s, and your story is true.
Did you know Mono LHRS ?
You dum little meth smoking Faggit. Get real, if being homeless in those areas and begging with a sign counts. Then I guess those gangs are still alive. lol
Shut your cock sucking mouth bitch unless your ready to wash some more cars and sell tamales to bury your homeboys.
Stupidity at its finest a lame keyboard warrior
